The person assessing you
Turn a name into a record you can check.
Ask for the prescriber's full name and job title. A prescriber is the person who can order medicine for you. Use that name when checking records, rather than the name of the care business.
Check the state board record
Public record
Check permission to practise and any board penalties
A state's medical board lists a doctor's licence status and public records of discipline. Discipline means the board has taken action against a doctor, such as limiting or taking away a licence. What the board publishes varies by state.
Each state's medical boards can be reached through links from the Federation of State Medical Boards, an association of state licensing boards. In some states, different kinds of doctor come under different licensing boards.
As of September 2026, the state where you are during a remote visit determines which licence or other permission the person treating you needs.

Match the details before drawing a conclusion
A name match
Useful check
Compare the full name and licence details with what the service gives you. Ask about any mismatch.
What it does not settle
Do not treat a similar name as the same person. Keep the record beside the details supplied.
No board penalty shown
Useful check
If no board penalty is shown, the board has no public record of such a penalty. An empty public penalty record does not establish that no complaint was ever made.
What it does not settle
It is not a rating of the prescriber's skill or of the proposed treatment.
A different job in health care
Useful check
Ask the prescriber what their job title means and which board holds that role's record.
What it does not settle
Health professionals such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants may assess people and prescribe medicines. As of September 2026, the rules for working with a doctor differ by state.
A licence check tells you about permission to practise. Keep the treatment question separate.
Check the reasoning as well as the name
Ask your treating person what they plan to assess and why the proposed medicine fits that assessment. Ask what would lead them to suggest another route.
If the reply is hard to follow, ask for ordinary words and a written version. You can take that explanation to another doctor or prescriber for a second view.
A question to keep
Which board can verify your permission to assess me for the state I will be in?
